dedication text (summary) dedication text (verbatim)

To all the Christian faithful who read or hear this writing Gilbert, by divine mercy bishop of Caithness, eternal greeting in the Lord. When in times preceding the time of our administration in our cathedral church there was only a single priest ministering to God, then on account of the poverty of the place and frequent hostility, we desiring, to the honour of our lord Jesus Christ and the most blessed Mary his mother, and All Saints, to enlarge that divine cult, [. . .] decreed to build the cathedral church itself with 'sumptibus propriis' and dedicated in honour of the abovementioned mother of God [. . .]

Universis Christi fidelibus hoc scriptum visuris vel audituris Gillebertus diuina miseracione Episcopus Cathanensis Eternam in Domino salutem. Cum in temporibus precedentibus tempus administracionis nostre in Cathedrali Ecclesia nostra non esset nisi vnicus sacerdos deo ministrans, tum propter loci paupertatem tum propter frequentem hostilitatem, nos ad honorem domini nostri Jesu Christi et beatissime Marie matris eius et omnium sanctorum desiderantes in eadem cultum divinum ampliare, habito super hoc diligenti tractatu et consilio virorum discretorum, decrevimus ipsam cathedralem ecclesiam sumptibus propriis edificare [eandemque] in honorem supramemorate dei genitricis dedicatam [. . .]
