James II confirms a recent charter of Robert Seres, burgess of Dundee, concerning the foundation of a perpetual chaplainry at the altar of St James the apostle in the parish church of Dundee from certain lands and annualrents. Robert de Seres, burgess of the burgh of Dundee, for the salvation of my soul and that of Katherine, my late spouse, the souls of my father and mother, my ancestors, my successors and all the faithful departed gives, grants, and by my present charter confirms to almighty God, the blessed Virgin Mary, St James the Apostle and the altar of the same, for the sustentation of a perpetual chaplain at the said altar in the parish church of St Mary of Dundee to celebrate Mass for the foresaid souls, a certain dwelling with pertinents lying within the burgh of Dundee in the street of St Mary on the south part of that street between the land of Robert Keryr to the west on one part and the land of Robert Moncur to the east on the other part, andalso the annualrents withinwritten, namely 4 s of annualrent from the land of John Reid lying in the Welgate of the said burgh on the west of that street between the land of the heirs of Robert Penny on the south part on one side and the common way which goes to the well of St Mary on the north part on the other side; and 10 s annualrent from the land of John Hugonis in the seagate on the north part of that street between the land of Lord Ogilvy on the east part on one side and the land of Finlay Thomson on the west part on the other side; and 10 s annual rent from the land of St Salvator lying in the Rattonraw of the said burgh on the north part of that street between the land of Patrick Foularton to the east on one side and the other land of St Salvator to the west on the other side; 6 s 8 d annualrent from the land of Alice Docherty lying in the Flukargate on the north part of that street between the land of John Scherar ot the east on one side and the land of Finlay Feryne to the west on the other side; and the third part of the Westfield of Dundee with its pertinents held from the lord constable of Dundee in feu-ferme rendering annually to the altar of St James in the said parish church 33 s 4 d of annualrent at the usual terms and the foresaid dwelling pays annually to the altar of St Salvator in the parish church of Dundee 9 s annualrent [. . .] The said chaplain is to celebrate Mass as much on ferial days as feast days namely in the mornings and evenings at the canonical hours and processions, The chaplain is also to hold anniversary Masses for me and my late wife Katherine at the altar of St James yearly on the day of my death and will celebrate a Mass on the following day with 12 chaplains and two candles overhead? as much for an antiphon as to illluminate the Mass. The presentation of the chaplain is to pertain to me while I am alive and the institution to the bishop of Brechin [. . .]
