Copy of great seal charter registered on back of present account. Charter, dated 4 June 1498, whereby king confirms grant of lands of the island of Burray to the church of Orkney for celebrating certain divine suffrages. Grant is in honour of God, and the Virgin Mary his mother, and St Magnus the Martyr, patron of the cathedral church of Orkney, to whom special devotion is shown. The divine suffrages include a Mass at the altar of the Blessed Virgin Mary within the said cathedral church.

Jacobus Dei gracia rex Scotorum, omnibus probis hominibus tocius terre sue clericis et laicis salutem. Sciatis quia nos nunc ad nostram perfectam etatem viginti quinque annorum completorum existentes post nostram generalem revocacionem per nos de omnibus donacionibus in nostra tenera et minori etate datis et concessis factam, nostre reduximus memorie specialem devocionem quam glorioso Martiri Sancto Magno, ecclesie cathedralis Orkadensis patrono, gerimus [. . .] nec ipsam revocacionem extendere super perpetua donacione per nos prius facta dicto glorioso Martiri Sancto Magno ecclesie cathedralis Orkadensis [. . .] confirmamus Dei Omnipotenti sueque gloriose passioni ac beatissime et gloriosissime Virgini et matri sue Marie, et glorioso Martiri Sancto Magno [. . .] unam videlicet missam dominicalem per capellanum et quatuor juvenes congruentibus habitibus indutos ad altare Beate Marie Virginis in ecclesie cathedrali Orkadensi cotidie cantando celebrandam [. . .]
