Description
St Rule or Regulus is the supposed founder of the see of St Andrews, and is associated in legend with the establishment of the cult of St Andrew in Scotland. According to the Aberdeen Breviary, Regulus was a holy man of Greek origin who, at the instigation of an angel, brought some of the bones of St Andrew from Patras in Greece (or from Constantinople), and landed at Kinrymont in Fife. A Pictish king, Oengus, who had won a victory with the help of St Andrew, gave Regulus land for a church. It was from this that the bishopric, and the town of St Andrews, developed. See U. Hall, 'Regulus', ODNB.
