Description
4th-century bishop of Myra. His cult was established in the East by the 6th century. He became widely known in the West in the 10th century as the result of a fictitious Life by Methodius. His relics were translated to Bari when Myra and its shrine were taken by the Moslems. From this point on St Nicholas's cult became almost universal in the West. ODS385--6.
