Description
The earliest historical record of St Kentigern occurs in Annales Cambriae (annals written at St Davids, Pembrokeshire, from the ninth century on) where his death in 612 is recorded. The earliest known life was written for Herbert, bishop of Glasgow (1147-64); the best-known Life was written c. 1180 by Jocelin of Furness. In this latter Life, Kentigern is presented as the apostle of Strathclyde and founder of a bishoric at Llanelwy/St Asaph in North Wales. There is also hagiographical material in the Aberdeen Breviary, where his feast day is a major duplex.
