Description
The Annals of Tigernach record the death of an Itharnan ‘among the Picts’ (apud Pictores) in 669; this seems to be the same Ethernan who is found in the Aberdeen Breviary, described as episcopus ex Scotis, ‘bishop from among the Scots’. The Life in the Aberdeen Breviary says that he was sent to study in Ireland, where he received episcopal ordination; he then ministered in Scocia, baptising and confirming, and consecrating and dedicating churches.
