Description
Possibly not an historical person, but a character in pious fiction. Her legend was declared apocryphal in 494 by Pope Gelasius. Her name first appeared in the West in the Martyrology of Rhabanus Maurus (9th cent.). She is perhaps best known for her connection with Joan of Arc, who believed that she heard the voice of Margaret encouraging her in her mission to the French king. ODS, 344--5.
