Description
Commemorated on 27 August in the Aberdeen Breviary: in the kalendar he is Malrubii Abbati, while in his office, he is Sancti Malrubii martyris. Here, Maelrubba is said to have been killed in Urquhart in Ross by Norwegian invaders, and buried in Applecross. The Annals of Tigernach record the death on 21 April 722 of Maelrubba at Applecross, 'after completing the eightieth year of his life'. A note on 'holy Maelrubai' in the Martyrology of Gorman, 21 April, calls him abbot of Bangor, of the the Cenel-Eogain, who 'blessed [a church] in Applecross in Scotland'. He is also called abbot of Bangor in the Calendar of Tallaght. See Anderson, Early Source, 219--20.
