King of the English. Son of King Edgar and Aethelflaed. Murdered on the orders of his stepmother, Aelfthryth, mother of Aethelred, who promoted his cult. Buried at Shaftesbury, his status as a martyr began to be postulated in the late 11th or early 12th cent. See C. Hart, ODNB, 'Edward [St Edward; called Edward the Martyr]'.
