Description
St Abbán of Magh Arnaide (Moyarney). The fullest surviving Life may be found in Plummer, Vitae, I.3--33. A second Latin Life is derived from this (Heist, pp. 256--74). The Irish Life is not directly related to either of the extant Latin Lives, and may be found in Plummer, Bethada, I.3--10. Abbán is said to have been the son of Cormac, King of Leinster, and to have founded numerous churches in the district of Ui Cennselaigh, almost coextensive with the present County Wexford and Diocese of Ferns. His principal community was at Magheranoidhe, subsequently known as 'Abbanstown', today, Adamstown; but he is also supposed to have founded a community at Rosmic-treoin, or New Ross.
