Description
Ciarán mac int Shaír (c.515--548/9) of Clonmacnoise; founder of the ecclesiastical community of Clonmacnoise in Meath. The monastery of Clonmacnoise (Cluain Moccu Nois) was founded a year before his death. The Life of St Ciarán survives in a Latin text of the early 13th cent., based on an older source, and an Irish text perhaps datable to about 1100. His feast day is 9 September. See 'Meath, Saints of', ODNB.
