Decimo octavo die mensis Septembris, anno suprascripto, commune consilium, ad instanciam et litteratoriam requestam rectoris et universitatis Sancti Andree, concessit Magistro Johanni Smalee, capellano perpetuo altaris Sancte Crucis, cituati et fundati in ecclesia parochiali Beati Nichalai huius burgi, liberam licenciam suam et benevolenciam ad standum et remanendum in dicta universitate, dum tamen ydoneum capellanum dicto altari substituat serviturum, qui tunc ex consensu eorundem substituit dominum Johannem Gall, capellanum, presentem et acceptantem, etc, eidem altari serviturum.
summary
On 18 September in the foresaid year [1444], the common council, at the instance and written request of the rector and university of St Andrews, granted to Master John Small, perpetual chaplain of the altar of Holy Cross, situated and founded in the parish church of St Nicholas of this burgh, his own free licence and good will for staying and remaining in the said university, as long as he should substitute a suitable chaplain to serve at the said altar. Then, with their agreement, he substituted Master John Gall, chaplain, who was present and willing, etc, to serve at that altar.
