The King, because of his special favour towards John, earl of Buchan, Lord of Auchterhouse, has created the town and lands of Doune, lying above the sea shore in the barony of Glendowoquhy, shire of Banff, a free burgh in barony; and granted the inhabitants the authority to buy and to sell etc., and that they might be burgesses in the said burgh, and have the power to elect bailies yearly etc., to have a market cross and a market on a Saturday, and free fairs yearly on the feast of the Birth of St John the Baptist and for its octave
