Walter Scot, tutor in Haining, explained that his predecessors and heritors of the Haining had ordered that 2 s be given for lights and service of the Holy Cross altar, situated in the parish kirk of Selkirk, from two rigs within Selkirk. Mention is made of sir John Brydin, chaplain.

"That day Valter Scot, tutor in Hanyng, of his awn propir confessione grantit and exponit how his predecessouris and rychtuis heritouris of the Hainyng, his fader and his gussar, irrevocabylly and for ever mair ordinit to be gevin ii s. of mony usuell to the uphaldin lychtis and service of the Haly Cross alter situat in the paroich kyrk in Selkyrk of twa rigis lyand within the fredom of Selkyrk, the tane upone the know pertening to schir Niniane Brydin, the tother in to Gosloudaillis in to the handis of Robert Thomsone in wodset, ane rig of Jhone Jonsone one the northt syd, and rig of (blank). And thair in presens of the balyeis and communite the forsaid Valter, be verteu of his tutory, ratifiet and affirmet the said ii s. to be gevin to the said alter and now instantlie to schir Jhone Brydin, chapellan of that ilk. {. . .}
