dedication text (summary) dedication text (verbatim)Memorandum that on the Thursday before the feast of St Luke the evangelist in 1316 an inquisition was made at Kirkcaldy concerning whether at any time the earls of Fife, predecessors of Sir Duncan, then earl of Fife, had done homage to the monastery of Dunfermline for the land of Cluny. The sworn witnesses claimed that on the day on which St Margaret the queen was translated at Dunfermline, in presence of Lord Alexander, king of Scots, namely Alexander III, 7 bishops, and 7 earls of Scotland, Sir Malcolm, earl of Fife, made homage to sir Robert de Kaldelech then abbot of Dunfermline, in front of the great altar before the great Mass, for the land of Cluny.
