At the time of this Gregory [son of King Dougal] flourished John Scotus who, at the request of Charles the Bald, translated the 'Ierarchiam' of Dionysius the Areopagite word for word from Greek into Latin; but afterwards in England at the monastery of Malmesbury, [stabbed] full of holes by the pens of the boys whom he had undertaken to teach, he was made a martyr .

Huius Gregorii tempore floruit Johannes Scotus qui, rogatu Karoli Calui, Ierarchiam Dionisii Arriopagite de Greco uerbum e uerbo transtulit in Latinum; sed postea in Anglia apud monasterium Malmisberiense stilis puerorum quos docendos susceperat confossus martir effectus est.
